1. Buy snow tires for the oncoming icy weather
It’s time to switch up your tires for the winter. Don’t lose traction on ice! Snow tires make sure you’re always prepared for any kind of icy, slippery weather. 2. Go get your brakes inspected
A simple brake inspection can mean a big difference between a safe vehicle and a vulnerable one. There are some simple tell-tale signs that you may need to get your brakes inspected or replaced. These can include: a pulling on one side of your vehicle when you engage your brakes, “hard pedal” or a difficulty when pressing the brake function, and even touchy brakes that grabble under the least bit of pressure. Keep an eye out for all of these signs. Either way, it’s always a safe bet to have your brakes checked out before winter hits.
3. Use wintertime windshield wiper liquid.
It’s important to note that not all wiper fluid does the same thing. Regular non-seasonal fluid is pretty much useless in the winter months. The fluid used during warmer weather will freeze fairly quickly or even on contact during cold winter months.
So as the freeze arrives, it’s time to upgrade your windshield fluid to winterized fluid. Winter fluids were developed with Canadian winters in mind, and they make sure not to freeze or become ice on your windshield.
4. Have your battery inspected
Once the mornings begin to get colder and colder, your battery is going to start having a harder time starting up. To avoid any unforeseen issues, have your battery inspected by a certified technician. Ensure that it’s at full power and capable of handling the upcoming winter months. You’ll want to double-check that your battery contacts are not corroded and that they’re nice and clean. If you know that the battery is already a few years old, buy a new one before winter comes. 5. Keep a first aid kit (and other items) in your car
You never know when you may need it. If your car fails or breaks down somewhere far between stations or towns, it can be a pretty dangerous situation. There are a number of scenarios that are easy to encounter, but you’d never have guessed it until they do. This is why it’s always imperative to have a simple first aid kit in your car for each of the winter months. Your kit could be stocked with gloves, blankets, jumper cables, or whatever you deem necessary.
6. Change your oil to suit the weather
The frostier the weather gets, the thinner you want that oil in your car to be. The thickness of your engine’s oil in freezing temperatures is signified by the first listed number in the oil’s specifications.
7. Keep your gas topped off
By keeping your gas tank full whenever you can, you diminish the odds of your gas lines from freezing over. Your engine may end being your only source of heat for a period of time if you find yourself stranded. A full tank will also ensure you get you to where you’re going!
